The Soweto Jewellery School is the third initiative of the Imfundiso Skills Development, a non-governmental organisation that runs various community-based jewellery training programmes across the country. It was established at the South West Gauteng College’s George Tabor Campus, and classes started in January 2004 with a roll of 15 students.

This is the second project initiated by Imfundiso Skills Development in South Africa. Established at the Sekhukhune Education Multi Purpose Centre, in the Fetakgomo Municipality of the rural Sekhukhune District, south of Limpopo Province, in 2004, the project is the first of its kind in the province. The project started with the registration of 15 students in the first year of operations.

The Mwadui Community Diamond Partnership (MCDP) pilot project was initiated in Tanzania in August 2006. Its overarching goal is to alleviate poverty and improve the health and wellbeing of small-scale informal diamond mining communities around the Williamson mine at Mwadui, which is operated by Williamson Diamonds Limited. The partners in the project are De Beers, Williamson Diamonds Limited, the government of Tanzania–represented at national, regional and district level–and the local communities.
